Smooth and Water
A few days before you are ready to install your sod, you should conduct a final grade and soak the area where the sod will be placed. When your sod arrives, lightly water the area again. Be sure to time when you water the ground, so it’s not muddy or damp when you are done.
Pay Attention to the Temperature
It’s important that your sod never reach over 130 degrees Fahrenheit. If this happens, it can cause damage to the roots and may kill your new grass. One way to prevent this is by making sure that your ground stays moist. This will also help ensure that the soil doesn’t get too hot.
Usually, sod is delivered on a pallet, in a roll. It’s important to remember that the pallets with the sod can get too hot, too. Because of this, you need to make sure you have removed the sod from the pallets within 24 hours.

- Unroll the sections of sod and lay them in a staggered pattern
- Start at the borders and edges along fences and sidewalks
- Work up the slopes
- Push ends together but don’t overlap
- Mount topsoil near bare edges
- Water sections lightly as you get done
