Have you decided to install sod on your lawn? If so, you are probably looking forward to the lush, green blanket of grass to come.
The good news is that you can install and establish sod any time of the year – including during the hottest months of the summer. While this is true, you may need a few tips to ensure that your sod gets the best start possible.
Get Your Yard Ready
It’s good to make sure the soil in your yard is ready for the sod you plan to install. It’s important to test the sod at least a month before you plan to install it. This will allow you to amend the phosphorus, potassium, and pH levels if needed.
After amending the topsoil using the right fertilizers, you should take steps to control all perennial weeds. A good option is a pre-emergent herbicide, which won’t harm your new sod. Be sure to smooth to the right grade or slope and remove any sticks, stones, and other debris.
Smooth and Water
A few days before you are ready to install your sod, you should conduct a final grade and soak the area where the sod will be placed. When your sod arrives, lightly water the area again. Be sure to time when you water the ground, so it’s not muddy or damp when you are done.
Pay Attention to the Temperature
It’s important that your sod never reach over 130 degrees Fahrenheit. If this happens, it can cause damage to the roots and may kill your new grass. One way to prevent this is by making sure that your ground stays moist. This will also help ensure that the soil doesn’t get too hot.
Usually, sod is delivered on a pallet, in a roll. It’s important to remember that the pallets with the sod can get too hot, too. Because of this, you need to make sure you have removed the sod from the pallets within 24 hours.
Laying Your New Sod
Once you are ready to lay your sod, there are a few tips to help you with this process. These include:
- Unroll the sections of sod and lay them in a staggered pattern
- Start at the borders and edges along fences and sidewalks
- Work up the slopes
- Push ends together but don’t overlap
- Mount topsoil near bare edges
- Water sections lightly as you get done
